Further Double Paradiddle Solo Ideas
jazz drumming #idea 63
by Tim Lake
This follows on from the previous idea and is likewise inspired by some ideas in John Riley’s book/DVD “The Master Drummer,” dealing with ideas for soloing.
As before, these exercises are also based on a double paradiddle in sixteenth notes. Whereas before we worked on two-bar phrases, here we are extending the idea to a four-bar phrase.
Exercise A deals with the underlying pattern and the accents.
Exercise B then voices the accents on the toms.
In Exercise C (in the PDF) only the right-hand accents are voiced on the toms, alternating between the rack tom and the floor tom.
Exercise D (in the PDF) accents all the right-hand single strokes, including those in the left-hand paradiddle, and plays them on the toms.
There are many further ideas to be developed out of these exercises.
Again, you will want to consider adding space and mixing the figures up with other licks and ideas.
You can also practice them as trading fours, moving in and out of time.
Have fun. Make music.
