Playing Paradiddles with 3/4 Jazz Time
jazz drumming idea #38
by Tim Lake
This idea comes from my forthcoming book "Jazz Drumming in 3/4".
The idea is simple. Take the paradiddle sticking and phrase it between the snare drum and the bass drum underneath 3/4 time. Because the phrase is four beats long but you are playing in 3/4 this becomes an interesting challenge and a nice rhythmic illusion.
To work on and be comfortable with all the permutations you need to start the pattern on each of the different bars in the cycle.
Play the hi-hat on beat two, and also beats two and three. You can apply other hi-hat variations too.
Experiment with moving the snare line around the kit.
